DVD Disk Recognized as CD (info for everyone with the problem)

SYMPTOMS
When you insert a DVD-RW disc into the DVD drive of a Windows XP-based
computer, Windows XP does not recognize the disc. For example, you do not
see any files on the disc.

You may also experience this problem with DVD-RW discs that have been
formatted as DVD-VR. Some consumer DVD recorders use the DVD-VR format.
CAUSE
This issue occurs because the Universal Disc Format driver, Udfs.sys, tries
to read the DVD-RW disc by using a packet length of 32 blocks instead of by
using a packet length of 16 blocks. CD-RW uses a packet length of 32 blocks,
but DVD-RW uses a packet length of 16 blocks.
RESOLUTION
A supported fix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to
correct the problem described in this article. Only apply it to systems that
are experiencing this specific problem. This fix may receive additional
testing to further ensure product quality. Therefore, if you are not
severely affected by this problem, Microsoft recommends that you wait for
the next Windows XP service pack that contains this fix.
