DVD burner coded for only certain media vendors?

I have a Plextor 708A and tried to burn a DVD with a Verbatum DVD+R. It
burns fine with I replace the Plextor with an older HP model, but I got 3
coasters using the Plextor with no error messages.

Plextor has a list of compatible media, but I was wondering if they might
have coded the firmware to use only media vendors which they had some type
of financial agreement .

Any thoughts?

That's odd. I have the same model Plextor and have used Verbatim, Imation,
Maxell and Memorex media, (plus and minus), with successful burns on all of
them. Have you updated the firmware on the Plextor? I assume your using the
same burning software with the HP and Plextor. If not, you might try a
different one with the Plextor if you can.

Yes, everything was the same except the drive. I did the latest firmware
update. I suppose I will try again.

I also seem to only have a 1x or 2x burner speed available (could be the
software). The DMA jumper is not on. The DVD Creation software (Impression
Pro) may be causing the problem, but I won't be changing it and there are no
updates to it. I may go get some other media since the Verbatim does not
appear to be an approved media.

This thing is running on a 2.6GHz P4 and 1G memory, so I don't think the
system is the problem.

Are your burns DVDs, since they seem to be very picky?

Thanks,
Clark

Can it read a DVD?

Try different DVD+R media.

I got some new media for it, 8x Memorex and it can now write my DVD file to
the -R media but not the +R. This may be an authoring software issue. I
did do a practice DVD with EZ CD Creator DVD and it would write fine to the
Plextor, but the DVD would not play in my older DVD player. If I use
Impression and the HP burner, it will. The Problem with Impression is that
Pinnacle is not updating it.

Anyone know what I should look for to see the difference between the DVDs
that will or will not play in the older DVD Player?

Well, I was partially right. The Plextor 708A will not burn a DVD
compatible with my older set top DVD player. I have done enough testing to
show it is not the fault of the media, or the content, or the software, just
the Plextor. My HP 200i (with original Firmware) does burn DVD +R disks
that will work on my player.

All burned media did work on computers and newer DVD players. This info is
for anyone having a problem like mine, or thinking about buying a new
burner.
