I have a Dell Dimension 8200 computer with windows XP Prof that has worked
very well except for a few problems here and there that always have ended up
being minor. However, I am pulling my hair with what appears to be the
first serious problem with this computer. Up until about two weeks ago, I
was able to use the Sony DRU 510A Burner and DVD-ROM NEC 5800 reader without
any difficulty. I could put in a burned DVD+R media, (that had the V2i
Protector Desktop Edition backup files of C:\ drive), in the Sony unit and
accomplish a file verify in about sixteen minutes. I could also put a
burned data DVD+R or CD-R media in the NEC unit and the window would open
almost immediately to show the folders and files, after clicking on the unit
Icon. I should note that my C: drive is approximately 6gbs in size.
Now, I have some urgent concern as to what is happening in the last few
days. On the Sony unit, the file verify for the V2i backup files takes
approximately forty minutes to complete (it will finally successfully
verify) and a data DVD+R and CD-R read attempt will hesitate for at least
nine to ten seconds before opening a window to show the folders and files,
after clicking on the Sony Icon. The NEC unit will now not even recognize
the V2i backup DVD+R media (a message will pop up and ask to insert disk,
even though disk is in the unit), and for the data DVD+R and CD-R media, it
will take at least ten to twelve seconds for a window to open to see the
folders and files.
I have accomplished the following trouble shooting so far but with no luck.
First, I ran a full scan with NAV 2004 and AdAware SE with the latest
definitions for both programs. I also check daily for updates for BoClean.
Secondly, I took two DVD V2i backup media (different dates of burn) and four
data DVD+R and CD-R media to a neighbors computer (same computer setup as
mine) and all of the media work flawlessly in his SONY DRU 510A unit and NEC
5800 unit. The V2i file verify took approximately fifteen minutes and the
data media opened almost immediately. So I think I eliminated any media
problem that might be with my burned media. Third, I ran the MS SFC and it
did not show any file replacements and then ran both checkdsk and defrag
with no problem. Forth, I went to Device Manager, deleted the NEC 5800
unit, rebooted and windows again correctly identified the unit. Fifth, I
thought maybe it could be a defective data flat cable on the secondary
channel and so replaced the existing one with a new one, but still no luck.
Six, I decided it was time for a new burner (Sony DRU 540A), replaced the
Sony 510, but still no luck. Seventh, as a "just in case," effort, I went
ahead and updated the V2i Protector program to the latest version (2.04),
but still no luck.
I went back to my records to see what I had done on my computer
approximately two weeks ago, and found that I had installed the new AdAware
SE Plus version and the MS04-025- Cumulative Security Update for IE 6
Service Pack 1. So I uninstalled the AdAware SE and still no luck! At this
point, I am reluctant to uninstall the IE Security Update, however I did
notice that the day after installing this update, I start getting a lot of
DCOM errors with the EventID of either 10005 or 10010. Before this install,
I did not see any DCOM errors.
If anyone has any recommended suggestions, I would sure appreciate the
information. I called Dell and it was suggested that I may want to
reinstall windows XP, but I declined, thinking that might be a bit too
severe at this point in time. I should note that my most urgent concern for
now, is how dependable (maybe undependable) my Image backup and restore
capability may be since I am having problems with both units. Thanks for
any help, Sam.
