Duplicate main pst folder entries, exporting email account settings

I've just reinstalled windowsxp and office 2003. For some reason I have two
identical main folders listed (each has identical hive of inbox, contacts,
sent items etc). I've seen some fixes posted but none seem to be good choices.
As far as I can tell, deleting and recreating the profile is the best
solution. But if I delete the profile, and recreate, I lose all email acct
settings. I just spent an hour entering those in and don't want to have t redo
that. But I can't find any way to export the email accts. The export settings
wizard works but on restore it reproduces the original problem. Apparently no
one was made up for Microsoft's stupidity by creating an email acct export
plugin? I find that rather hard to believe, since it'd obviously be a great
help to many people. Does anyone know of such a plugin, or a reliable routine,
to export and import the email acct settings only? Or a good fix for the
duplicate main pst folder?

Use OE; Import mail account settings.
Then create a new profile, after which in OL Import the mail account
settings.

I don't see how that works. I created an OE account and Outlook detected that
and added it. Back in OE, at File/Import/Mail Acct Settings, the only account
presented for "Import" is the same account, which is useless. At the Account
dialog, there is also an import area, but it looks only for iaf files which I
don't have.

You dont create an OE, account you open OE and Import>Mail Account Settings>
from OL/Exchange.

It may work like that for you but not here. As I mentioned before #1 if there
are no OE accts, the import mail acct wizard *in OE* fails because it reports
that there are no accounts to import. If I create an account in OE, and have
opened Outlook, and outlook has 'connected' to the OE acct (automatically, I'm
only prompted as to whether or not OL should do that, I say ok), then that OE
acct is listed in the import dialog. That's useless of course. Now, I've
deleted all OE accts, and removed from Outlook where there were also listed as
accts. The OE import mail accts wizard still finds the three test OE created
account to import (which is weird) and shows now OL accounts as always.

I wonder if the facility you report is only available if the OL data file is
in OL 2003 format? Doesn't make much sense that it would matter, as the acct
info isn't stored in the pst anyways.

Thanks for trying to help, I think this comes down to more bad engineering on
the part of Microsoft. Still need a fix if anyone has one.

It is not neccessary to have any mail accounts set up in OE to import mail
accounts from OL
You can do this from the OE news view.
Start>Run "%ProgramFiles%\Outlook Express\msimn.exe" /outnews

It is not neccessary to open OL in order to import the mail account settings
The OL mail accounts are held in the registry, not the pst.

It sounds as though your OL accounts have not being created/saved or if they
have, they are completely corrupted.

There must be some major difference between our configurations because there
are no outlook email accounts listed for me by the OE import facility, it only
shows OE accts that outlook has 'tapped'. This is true whether I start from
the OE email screen or the OE news screen. The outlook email accounts are not
corrupted, I'm using them every day.

Thanks for trying to get me set up. But the approach you're suggesting does
not work in my case. I hope someone else with extensive knowledge in the area
will chime in.

There are third party tools which will revail your OL accounts, but if OE
cannot see them............?
