Dual boot - Replacing 98 with XP

R

Random

I currently have a dual boot system set up as follows :-

Primary hard disk - Windows 98 (I installed this first)
Secondary hard disk - Windows XP (I installed this second)

The secondary hard disk is in 2 partitions - One for the OS, one for data.

When I installed XP it detected 98 and set up a boot menu which allows the
selection of both 98 or XP when loading.

I now want to replace the windows 98 installation with XP but am concerned
that this will mess up my boot sector and therefore stop the second windows
XP install from loading.

My current boot.ini looks like this :-

[boot loader]
timeout=10
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP
Professional" /fastdetect
C:\="Microsoft Windows 98 Second Edition"

What do I have to do to install XP on the first hard disk but retain a boot
menu that allows the choice of both the new XP and the existing install on
the secondary drive?

Is it a case of just installing XP on the primary disk and it will detect
the XP on the secondary or will I have to start editing the boot.ini?

It's XP Pro if that makes any difference.

Thanks for any advice

Hi Random,

When you install XP, it will recognize the other version and create a
boot menu allowing the booting up from both versions.
However, I advise you to create a floppy disk with the boot.ini, ntldr
and ntdetect.com files located in X: (where X is the partition where
you have currently installed XP)

I would also advise you to read this article and change the appropiate
policies so you can use the commands
set AllowAllPaths = TRUE
set AllowRemovableMedia = TRUE
in the Recovery Console so you can replace your boot.ini if the
installation of the second XP goes awry:
