Dual boot on Windows XP

This is my second attempt to fix my problem.
I had Win98 on C drive and WinXP on D drive (same hard drive) with dual
boot. I overwrote Win98 on C drive, then I did not have the dual boot option.
It was suggested to use Recovery Console and fixboot but it did not work. I
tried fixboot on both drives with neither creating a dual boot option.
I have now loaded WinXP on both C and D drives. Can I somehow make my D
drive the C drive and have it boot?
I would just reinstall WinXP on D drive but I do not want to loose all my
files (which it appears would happen). Will it delete all my files?
All I want is for it to boot into the WinXP on D drive.
Any suggestions?

Thank you.

Bob,

re-installing XP over your current XP will NOT delete any files you may
have. Remember do not format just reinstall on top of it.
This should also fix your MBR and hence your boot problem.

Install Windows 98 after XP is Installed.
