Hi I have xp installed as a ntfs file system and i was
wondering in order to dual boot with windows 2000 can i
just install windows 2000 on a new partition with a fat
file system or do i need to re install xp with a fat file

You can have both on NTFS partitions. If you install 2000 after XP then you
will need to copy NTLDR and NTDETECT.COM from the I386 folder of the XP CD
after install to c:\ to be able to boot XP

Thanks for your response....I am studying for the windows
2000 pro test and it says in this book that you can only
dual boot windows 2000 pro with a fat partition. I wonder
why?

Are you sure you read the section completely? I do NOT mean to sound rude to
you BUT you might have been missing the CONTEXT...or have read the section
incompletely...To summarise:

If one wants use the BUILT-IN Boot Manager (comes with all Win2000 versions)
to dual/multi-boot Win2000 with:

1. Win95/98/ME...then one has to create a FAT(32) PRIMARY partition to host
all OS boot files...otherwise the dual/multi-boot will NOT succeed!
2. WinXP...then ONE can have any file format for the PRIMARY partition

Please chec kthe book (literature) again & if there is still doubt get in
touch...

BTW Good luck with your exam...Hope you pass!
