Problems Dual Boot Windows 2000 and Windows 95

R

Rob

I have them on two seperate drives. The Windows 2000 install is NTFS,
the Windows 95 FAT (or FAT32). I have the Windows 2000 as master and
it boots to it and does identify the drive where 95 is on. Supposedly,
I'm now to edit the boot.ini file and add something to it so it gives
me the choice to boot to either one on startup. Problem is, there is
no boot.ini. Any help appreciated.

It's a hidden system file but a moot point since the system partition is
NTFS it won't be natively possible to do. Look for a third party boot
manager.

OK, I have found the boot.ini and have modified it as follows:

[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINNT
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINNT="Microsoft Windows 2000
Professional" /fastdetect
multi(0)disk(1)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Windows 95"

When I boot up, a DOS type window with text appears, I select Windows
95, but it keeps going back to the same window, won't go to Windows 95

I have both harddrives on a single cable, the NTFS one is master, the
FAT is slave and they are on the second IDE (IDE2?)

I can select Windows 2000 and it runs fine, under 2000.

Are you saying there is no way to edit the boot.ini to get it to boot
95? What 3rd party booter do you recommend?

Thanks.

Are there any free bootloaders available?

The 2nd hard drive is a 6gb, my main one is 100gb. I left 30 gb on the
100gb unformatted, any way to install windows 95 there and use the
windows 2000 bootloader? I tried formatting it to FAT type, but I
think it said it couldn't, but I could give it another try.

Generally you install oldest first, newest last. Here's an article that
details the steps.

I'm now looking at this procedure for installing win95 on an existing
NTFS system:
http://thpc.info/dual/dual9xonntfs1.html
I have three partitions on my 100gig drive, so I can allocate one
(about 25 gig) to windows 95. The instructions say to use Windows 2000
Disk Management to make this a primary partition, but there is nothing
under Disk Management to accomplish this. I was able to format that
partition to FAT32. How do I convert this to a Primary partition? How
do I subsequently install Windows 95 on it?

Also, references are made to the Primary Master Hard Disk. Does this
mean I have to swap where I plug the IDE cable into the motherboard, I
put the CD drive in the first IDE slot.

Thanks again for your help.

*** You'll need to delete the partition then recreate it in order to make
the partition type change. There are also rules as to how far from the start
of the disk the fat partition can be. Partitions can be moved with the use
of third party tools such as Partition Magic (or equal). If you're not
starting over then I'd go with the boot manager.

How
do I subsequently install Windows 95 on it?
*** I'd contact the author of the article for more details.

*** Typically the first hard disk is always connected as master on channel
one. Generally the CD/DVD drives are connected to channel two.

Disregard previous post, I found a little program called masterbooter
and the only thing I needed to do was boot to a windows 95 boot disk,
run the program and it detected both operating systems and now I get a
window every time I turn on the computer to select between the two.

Thanks for your help, though.

Oh, the xosl program you linked to appeared to support multi operating
system booting on a single disk only, the masterbooter does not care if
you have them on different disks, that's why I used it.
