DST Question

I have Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition with Service Pack 2. Microsoft
is telling me that I need a DST update for my computer. However, I live
in Arizona which doesn't have Daylight Savings Time, so I shouldn't need
to install any updates should I?

You should probably install all the updates that Microsoft calls
"critical" with the possible exception of Internet Explorer 7 (IE7).
If you have been updating regularly, you should already have the DST
fix, even if we don't need it in AZ. (I'm in AZ, too.) If you haven't
done any updates, you're in for a long process, even with a broadband
connection. If you're on a dialup connection, I'm not sure what to
tell you. :(

I would install the update; this installation is easy, quick, and
should not break anything. After the time zone was set to 'Arizona'
on your system, it is supposed to stay that way unless somebody
changes it. The DST update should not affect this setting.
However, you may have application features that calculate the
correct time in other zones based on your system's settings. If
such software calculates these times based on your operating system
without the update, then these calculations may lead to incorrect
information.

I'm no expert, but it seems plausible to me that some
Internet-related software may use your system's time in conjunction
with XP's time-zone information to calculate the current time
outside of Arizona. If XP's time-zone information is not current,
then you may not see correct times displayed at web sites, when
running JAVA applets, or using browser add-ons, to name a few.

If I'm totally wrong, then I'm sure somebody will post a response,
so check this thread again in a few days.

I use the auto updates and the only thing that I haven't updated is
IE. I'm not ready for IE 7 yet. I went in and checked the updates and
you're right, it has already been updated. I'm hoping that this won't
affect anything since we don't have DST here?
