Drivers

Using XP Home, SP2

After reading Gary Tull's article about drivers, I decided to update mine.

One point of confusion is: When clicking "Update Driver" button, you get a
screen saying that if a CD-ROM is available, it should be inserted. How
could an "old" CD help with NEW drivers?

Main question: Found several devices which have new drivers available.
Without exception, I received the messge that the devices have not had
Windows Logo testing for compatibility with XP. So, I did not install any
new drivers. Why are the drivers provided by Microsoft not available for
installation in Microsoft programs?

Thank you.

the insert cd is a generic statement for new installation.

Just another method of sourcing the drivers; e.g. if drivers are corrutped,
and yu have a CD, it's quickest to j8ust let it pull them from the CD.
They're just covering all the bases.

That's sort of like the "Good Housekeeping Seal of Approval". It simply
means that the drivers haven't been submitted to MS (which costs money for
the creator) and received the MS "blessing" that they're compatible. Unless
it's MS software, it's usually not tested for "compatability" in most cases.
Only the big boys can afford it. There are even some MS drivers that
haven't yet passed the "compatability" testing; they simply haven't been
tested is all that means. It means nothing about whether they are
compatible or not in my experience. MS wants you to use all-MS products,
that's all, and no one else's. Marketing hype is another way to put it.

Not sure what you mean there; they are available. Clarification?

The standard procedure for installing drivers is for windows to always
ask if you have a cd or floppy. Floppy now is
almost non existant. Most often a computer comes with a Software Cd
with the drivers you need on it. If you upgrade
a part such as a Video Card it will usually come with a software Cd
also. Many drivers are not tested by the WHQL
( Windows Hardware Quality Labs). I always go ahead and choose yes if
though I get the warning. In most cases the
drivers work fine. You can find most drivers you need on line. Hope
this helps.

When updating drivers, I go to the hardware manufacturers site and
download their latest driver. It usually includes directions on how to
install them. I've use sites such as Driver Detective
(http://www.drivershq.com/) to list my current drivers. To get newer
drivers through DD, however, costs $$.
