DRIVER WOES

Driver Woes

I have encountered problems with my HP 5100c Scanner. In the course of
probing to discover what the problem(s) might be, I found 2 entries
under [Systems] (Device Manager) that appear to be irregularities. I
don’t understand from drivers, so this is probably a long shot.

1. PCMCIA adapters
{ ! } Cirrus Logic PCIC Compatible PCMCIA Controller
“This device cannot start. (Code 10)

2. SCSI/RAID Controller
{ ! } SCSI/RAID Host Controller

I accessed the Hardware Update Wizard and tried to Update each of them
from my installation CD, but was not successful.

1. […] “…could not find a better match than the software you currently
have installed”

2. “Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware because a
previous instance of the device driver is still in memory (Code 38)

Given that I am already over my head at this point when it comes to
Systems in XP, can anyone suggest what buttons to push to reinstate
these 2 devices? My sense is that I should uninstall and reinstall them,
but I am nervous about tinkering with anything in this area.

You should have the correct drivers on a software CD that came with
the computer. PCMCIA has to do with PC Cards http://www.pcmcia.org/ .
SCSI/RAID Host Controller probably refers to a integrated ( built onto the
Motherboard ) Raid Controller. If you don't use either then don't worry
about them. Your Scanner problem is due to some
other install problem. Go to
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareList?lc=en&cc=us&dlc=en&product=61840&lang=en&os=228
and download and install the latest software and drivers.

If you have already installed the software and drivers then remove them from
Device Manager and Add/Remove Programs
in Control Panel. Disconnect the Scanner and reinstall the drivers and
software. Then reconnect the Scanner.

Rich:

Much appreciated.

I was looking for something in Device Manager that looked like Drivers
for the HP 5100c Scanner when I spotted the irrelevant SCSI etc. stuff.
I can’t see anything (else) in the Device Manager Tree that I can relate
to the scanner.

Part of the problem I have is that I can’t leave the scanner attached to
my PC. It takes up 100% cpu when attached; I can’t even shut down
without shutting off the power. My DAQ is: would the purported drivers
show up in the Device Manager Tree even if the scanner is not connected?
The reason I ask is; I have d/l & unistalled the s’ware from the HP
CD-ROM more than half a dozen times and done the HP Driver Update thing
about the same number of times. Still; no driver(s) that seem to
indicate a scanner appear in Device Manager.

I also d/l the HP System Diagnostics Utility and ran it; it’s just that
I don’t know how to interpret the results.

Just so I am clear on your Rx when I run through it all again; which of
the following should I d/l ?

» ScanJet 5100C/Cse/Cxi PrecisionScan update - Parallel Only (Note: I
don’t have a printer)

» Update for hp scanjet scanners that use PrecisionScan LT,
PrecisionScan or PrecisionScan Pro for Microsoft Office 2003

» HP PrecisionScan Scanning Software Destinations Update 1.0,
including support for MS Office XP

Another anomaly is that the HP Program Menu is supposed to have a,
“Button Manager”, in it. On some Installs it shows up, on some others it
doesn’t.

Well, I know how you feel since I have a HP 5370C. No, the drivers will
not show up in Device Manager unless they are
fully installed properly and XP recognizes them.
Go to Program Files Folder>HP Folder. Look in there for HP Instant
Support D and Memories Disc. If there delete them. Look for Digital Imaging
Folder and delete any reference to your scanner. I only have a HP Precision
Scan Folder in
my HP Folder. I delete the complete folder. In C:\Windows look for the
Twain_32 Folder and rename it to Twain_32old.
Finally go to Start>Run type: regedit. Navigate to
HKey_Local_Machine\Software\HP Folder. Expand and delete any
reference to your scanner. This is always tricky for me because I also
have a Deskjet Printer. Follow the instructions to
remove the HP Software from Add/Remove Programs in Control Panel. That
should give you a clean shot at it. Have the
Scanner disconnected and reinstall the latest HP software and drivers. If
using a parallel connector shutdown and connect.
Try disconnecting your web connection and disabling your firewall,
antivirus etc before installing the HP software and drivers.

Hi Rich;

I took my best shot at following your RX, but there seems to be some
problem with XP's Uninstall.exe that is complicating the procedure.

I've done a cut & paste here that I hope turns out to be intelligible. I
can't Preview it to see for sure; so here goes.
Well, I know how you feel since I have a HP 5370C.

No, the drivers will not show up in Device Manager unless they are fully installed properly and XP recognizes them.

State: HP partially removed in Add/Remove. The attempt to uninstall
generated the message:
“Uninstall encountered a problem and needs to close. Uninstall.exe has
generated errors and will be closed by Windows. You will need to restart
the program.”

Shut down and disconnected Scanner.
Restarted.
Nothing appears for HP in Programs Menu.
Add/Remove shows 0.23 MB remains and attempts to remove generate same
error message as above.
Go to Program Files Folder>HP Folder. Look in there for HP Instant Support D and Memories Disc.

Search; “a word or phrase” (C:) and subfolders: “HP Instant Support” =>
“There are no results to display”
If there delete them. Look for Digital Imaging Folder and delete any reference to your scanner. I only have a HP Precision Scan Folder in my HP Folder. I delete the complete folder. In C:\Windows look for the Twain_32 Folder and rename it to Twain_32old.

Search: “All or part of file” (C:) Twain_32
Five hits:
(1)Folder twain_32
(2)TWAIN_32.DLL [49.5KB Twain_32 Source Manager (Image Acquisitio]
(3)TWAIN_32 [21.9 KB. DL_ file]
(4)TWAIN_32 [15.0 KB Adobe PhotoDeluxe Plugin
(5)twain_32.dll (highlighted in blue) [49.5 KB _32 Source Manager (Image
Acquisitio]

Action: Renamed Folder (1) “twain_32old”
Finally go to Start>Run type: regedit. Navigate to HKey_Local_Machine\Software\HP Folder. Expand and delete any reference to your scanner.

Action: Deleted Folder and contents “Hewlett-Packard”
This is always tricky for me because I also
have a Deskjet Printer. Follow the instructions to remove the HP Software from Add/Remove Programs in Control Panel. That should give you a clean shot at it.

Action: I again tried to remove the 0.23 MB remaining in Add/Remove but
got the same error message as above.

I clicked the “send error report” to MS, but got no response as I
usually do when I go this route.

And that is where it stands.
