Drive not accessible; file or directory corrupted

I'm running XP Pro SP2 problem free for the last year with three drives (C -
system drive, D - software drive, G - data drive). This afternoon, I
uninstalled CA Antivirus from my system which required a reboot to complete.
When my system booted back up I found that my D drive was no longer
accessible. Its icon shows up in mycomputer, but when I click on it I get the
message:

D:\ is not accessible
The file or directory is corrupted and unreadable

Any thoughts on what's going on here and how to fix it? I'm out of ideas.
Thanks!

Rightclick the drive icon in explorer. Properties, Tools tab, "Error Checking"

I tried that, but when I click OK to start the error checking, the dialog box
disappears and nothing happens. There's no discernible drive activity as far
as I can tell.
