Drag and drop files to a CD not made by DirectCD or XP

I read several posts about how the Packet Writing format
is not supported by XP's integrated burning function. How
do you then know if a previously written CR-R is
compatible? If I unknowingly put in a CD that has been
burned by Roxio Easy CD Creator and drag and drop a file
to the drive, I get the message "Windows encountered a
problem when trying to copy this file. Retry or Cancel"
which makes sense. However if I press Cancel, the file
still appears to be staged for burning but with 0 bytes
and disappears from where it came from regardless of
whether I Moved them or Copied it!! It's gone!!! The
file's wiped out!! Is this normal?

Thanks for you reply.
Retrieving the lost files is not the problem. I just want
to know if it is normal for XP to behave like this. You
would think Windows would give me a "Read Only" message
and just leave the file where it was, not delete the
original source file. Normally when you get an error
copying a file to another location, the original source
file stays where it is even though it's copy doesn't arive
to the destination. XP deletes the source file when
attampting to copy it to the CD. Does this happen on your
system when you attempt to drag files to a CD that was
made with CD Creator and not DirectCD?
