drag and drop editing not working but turned on

I turned on the drag and drop editing under options in tools, but it is still
not dragging and dropping. Get a "no go" sign when try to do it in document.
Never happened before. Any ideas?

If what you're trying to drag and drop is text or is In Line With Text, it
can be dropped only inside the document margins in a position where there is
existing text.

I believe the document is protected. You don't mention if you created this
document or if someone else did. Try Tools > Protection > Unprotect document.

also can't drag'n'drop. I created the document, did not protect it, can edit
other ways, trying to drag text into regular document area inside margins. I
don't get any "can't do" symbol, just can't do it.

Not sure if this always occurred on this computer but I've never encountered
it before. Would changing settings in "Services" affect this? I can't see
how it would - the settings just talk about letting remote computers access
this computer, etc.

Do you have "Drag-and-drop text editing" checked on the Edit tab of Tools |
Options?
