DPVSETUP.EXE

when I try to test my sound card from Sounds & Audio Devices in CP, I get
the message Error trying to execute DpvSetup.exe. Error Code 0x80004005,
and it shuts down. The MS Knowledge base article on acceleration does not
help, nor did re-installing Direct x V9.
Thanks

Try the DX diagnostics. Go>start\run and type in dxdiag
and hit ok. Now click your way through the various tabs
and the tools there. Keep smiling.

John,
You'll probably find that your onboard soundcard supports DirectX playback
functions, but is not capable of supporting Direct Play Voice, which is a
real time input function.

John,
OK, that's a good point :)
In that case, are you sure that your mic is working and/or not muted ?

John,
Don't know if you've seen these, but the first link suggests either
disabling any voice clients (like Messenger etc. or upgrading to latest
versions of same:
http://forums.us.dell.com/supportforums/board/message?board.id=dim_audio&message.id=42400
This next one is a bit more left field and suggests that installing missing
codecs might solve it
http://forum.digital-digest.com/archive/topic/14871-1.html
On the other hand, I'm thinking my son's PCI soundblaster clone works
perfectly and cost about GBP20 :)
And don't any DirectX technicians peruse this group??
Maybe they're all over at
microsoft.public.win32.programmer.directx.audio
partying or something...
Good luck,

I just tried to remove the messenger program that comes with Windows, and
just run the test with the latest downloaded version of messenger. No
Change.
I've just ordered a new sound card, since the dxdiag program tells me the
sound card contains no hardware buffers. (It DID work before though)
Im grasping at straws now, it's my wife's puter and she's turned into a bit
of a nag, so I've GOT to get it fixed if I ever want sex or a good meal.
I've just ordered a new (inexpensive) sound card. I doubt if it will help,
but I've got to try.
I DO appreciate all of your input.
Thanks
John

John,
Good luck with the new card, and hope things pick up with la femme too.
This is the card my son uses on his system, and he's got DX9b and uses voice
link for online gaming and other functions
http://uk.europe.creative.com/estore/product.asp?prod=264&page=6
But interestingly, the page doesn't even mention DirectX.
Do you think the change from working to non-working was when DX8 was
upgraded to DX9?
As a last resort - has a system restore to an earlier date (pre DX9) been
suggested so far?
I'm pretty sure that the PCI card will have more features than the onboard
sound, but then I could just be prejudiced :)
