downloading picture problems

I am running windows xp and for awhile I could save
images that I wanted off the internet for backgrounds as
jpegs and they would have a name associated with them
like fall foliage ...etc... now the save as untiled
bitmaps and when i do save them it shuts the current
window down then I have to bring it back up how can i fix
this problem? thank you for reading this
