Some thing was downloaded to my computer and I am
experience major problems with windows.

1. When I press the start menu, there are no icons listed
under programs. If I navigate to start menu folder under
documents and settings they are all there.

2. The Icons that are pinned to the start bar, will only
open if I right click and select Open.

3. there are no programs listed in add/remove programs

4. I tried to run msicuu2.exe to clean up the registry
and it said my windows installer is not install properly.

5. I can access programs by navigating to the icon under
program files and it says that they are not installed
properly.

6. I cannot bring up internet explorer, because it tries
to download a file and says that there is a problem
sending a command to the program.

I ran a virus check, I ran a spyware search, and cleaned
out the registry entries that were listed. When I was
doing research on my computer a download occurred and it
started acting up after that. Please offer any
suggestions.

Since we don't know what the "something" was, what av you used, or what
spyware removal tools you used, it is impossible to give you a specific
answer. You could try doing a System Restore to before the "something"
downloaded. Make sure you have a firewall.

If you would like more help, please repost with more details about the
"something", how it downloaded itself, what av and spyware removal
tools you used, etc. It certainly does sound like you have malware on
your computer, but I can't be sure from the information you gave us.

I use CA Inoculate IT 7.0, I scanned for Spyware with Ad
Aware, no adware. The download box, was just a flash on
the screen so I could not identify what was coming in.

If I upgrade to SP2 will that clean up the windows
installation?

When I try to install any programs I get a message that
the windows installer could not be accessed. When I try
to unregister (per q315353) and register I get a invalid
command error).

I thought that Inoculate was obsolete, replaced by CA's EZ-Trust av.
However, I may be wrong. In any case, you do want to make sure your av
is a current version, not earlier than 2003, and that its definitions
are updated.

You need more than Ad-aware to clean off your system. I'm not familiar
with the other program you mentioned. Here are my normal malware
removal steps:

Remove spyware with Spybot Search & Destroy from
www.safer-networking.org and Ad-aware from www.lavasoftusa.com. Be sure
to update these programs before running them. These programs are free,
so run them both since they complement each other. It is best to run
antivirus and spyware removal tools in Safe Mode. You may also want to
run CWShredder and HijackThis from http://aumha.org/freeware.htm.
Although CWShredder is no longer being updated, it will still clean
older variants of the CoolWebSearch malware. A combination of
HijackThis and About:Buster (http://www.majorgeeks.com) works well in
removing homepage hijackers. Please read the instructions carefully.
Make sure you are able to see all hidden files and extensions (View tab
in Folder Options). Also, make sure you've visited Windows Update and
applied all security patches. Do not install driver updates from
Windows Update. Make sure you are running a firewall.

You do not want to add a major operating system upgrade to a system that
isn't working right. You need to get your present system healthy before
you add anything more to it.

Good luck,

Malke
