Downloaded AVI files no longer play

Downloaded AVI files no longer play in media centre or other video viewers,
however i can still play dvds, when i attemptt to play an avi file it looks
like it will work for a short while then i get a message saying windows media
centre has stopped working collecting more information about the problem, but
that message never seems to disappear the longest i have left it was just
over an hour, this happens with all avi files including ones which have
worked in the past, can anyone help?

Do you have the necessary codecs installed?

I would assume i have the necessary codecs installed as up until 3 days ago
the files worked fine

Try doing a system restore to a date prior to the onset of the problem.
