I cannot download anything from http://download.microsoft.com. Not
windows defender, not WMP 11, not a patch for MS flight sim ....
nothing. My copy of windows is legit and validates. Microsoft Update
works. But when I try and connect to the site using IE 7, I get the
following error message:

Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage

Most likely causes:
You are not connected to the Internet.
The website is encountering problems.
There might be a typing error in the address.

What you can try:
Check your Internet connection. Try visiting another website to
make sure you are connected.

Retype the address.

Go back to the previous page.

Since you are using a beta program (IE7), all bets are off. "Beta" means
software that isn't finished yet and is still in the bug-checking
phase. Beta software should never be run on a production machine or on
any machine which you are unwilling to wipe and start over.

Post questions about the beta IE7 in the newsgroup specifically set up
for it:

No firewall. And I'm not so sure this is related to IE7 in particular.
The problem arose following a clean install, which immediately
included an "upgrade" to IE7. If I could simply remove IE7 and return
to IE6, I would. But that too seems to involve downloads from the
microsoft download sites that I cannot connect to. Every other site it
fine. Just a problem with microsoft downloads.
