Download EXE files

K

Kåre Moy

I have Windows 2000 sp4 and IE6.0
Downloading EXE files from ftp server is normal and no problem.
Downloading EXE fils from http server will NOT work. It will not ask for
where to save the file.
Other files as normal.

I am working in a network, but it is only my computer who has the problem.
When I log on as another user the problem is the same.

Hope some windows experts can help.

Set this for .exe files.

You set this for each file type, e.g. for .zip
Explorer-View-Folder Options-File Types
Find the .zip association (may be WinZip File)
Edit, (or click Advanced on ME or XP) and check the "Confirm open
after download" box

The path to Folder Options may vary according to your operating
system. It may be:
Explorer-View-Folder Options
Explorer-Tools-Folder Options
Start-Settings-Folder Options
Start-Settings-Control Panel-Folder options.

Hello Leboeuf

"Confirm open after download" is checked. ZIP, PDF etc downloads normal.
It is only programfiles (EXE) from http servers that does not work.
It goes directly to "Getting fileinforamtion". Open and open folder is
greyed out.
I can only klick at Cancel.

Please help

While you do not seem to have the classic symptoms that this response
if for, try it anyway:

If it is only .exe files, then read on and see if this is relevant:
You may have an invalid plugin.
Netscape-Style Plug-ins Do Not Work After Upgrading Internet Explorer
[Q303401]
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;303401

Remove the plugin with Regedit.exe
Start-Run-Regedit.exe
Navigate down to this key and remove it, after exporting it as a
normal safety precaution.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet
Explorer\Plugins\Extension\.exe

If that key exists, then you will see what plugin has been installed.
The key does not normally exist.

Alan

I do not have Extension\.exe under my plugins in my register, only the
following keys:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Plugins\MIME
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Plugins\PluginsPage
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet
Explorer\Plugins\PluginsPageFriendlyName

It has to be something else that is wrong. From ftp://ftp server it is no
problem, only from http://.....
Please try again.
