Download error

I recently had to replace my hard drive in my laptop, and I've been having
some difficulty getting everything working again. I'm not exactly an expert
in these things, so I'm hoping my question will be easily answered. When
trying to download anything I get this error:

ERROR
The requested URL could not be retrieved

I am also unable to download many of the updates on Windows Update. I
finally used another computer to download SP 2 for windows XP and transfered
it over to update this one. I am currently using Internet Explorer 7 Beta 3,
if that helps. Any suggestions of how I could get things working again would
be much appreciated.
