Download Corruption

J

Jim

I just built a new computer, and I am having an unusual problem. I can
connect to the internet with no problem, as well as my home network.
However, when I try to download a file, they all come back that they
are corrupted. This is from any site, many differnt companies and
files. Is there some setting that I am not putting correctly? Then,
occasionally I can get a file downloaded without a problem.

I have a AMD 3800+ on an Abit KN8 Board with WIn XP Pro. USR Router,
and working off of a clean install.

So far I have only installed the software to access my motherboard. I
cannot successfully downloan Netscape, NVidia drivers, Lexmark Drivers,
Antivirus software from any site. However, I can apply Windows updates
fine, and for some reason I could get Ad-Aware with no trouble.

Anyone with any ideas????

New home built computer. Did you install the M/B drivers as a first step
after installing the operating system. Without them you may experience all
sort of problems, including file corruption due to incorrect IDE drivers.

Hi Jim :)

You can access the Internet and webpages, but, cannot download. Correct?
Thus, there is not appear to be a connection problem per se, just that you
cannot download files.

It could be one of several causes. Perhaps you could provide us with some
better details of the problem. What type of files are you trying to
download? Is it with any type of file, or are you only trying to download
..exe files at this time?

Please post the exact wording of the error message, as it will often give us
a good clue as to what is causing the failure.

Yes, I installed the MB Drivers that came with the board, no luck.
There was a specific IDE driver which I installed as well. I tried
reinstalling them after you posted this, but no luck there either.

Sorry I should have included more info there in my original post. Yes
I can access the internet and the rest of my home network without a
problem. Also none of the other computers on the network have a
problem with downloading, just the new one. The types of files I am
trying to download are drivers, such as Version: 81.98 of the NVidia
graphics driver or my Lexmark printer driver, and program files like
Netscape. For whatever reason, I can download and install all of the
WinXP updates, but cannot get updates for other programs (WordPerfect,
Anti-VIrus) yet for some reason I was able to download Ad-Aware last
night.

Looking at your post I noticed that it seems that if I am downloading a
pure .exe file, I seem to get it ok (Ad-Aware, Trillian), but those
that download a package, or call another program, or if it is a setup
type of program, I have problems (even when Trillian installed
correctly, it called quicktime to be installed, and that failed)

The error message I get varies slightly depending on the program, but
always states that the file I downloaded is corrupted, failed a CRC
check etc, and that I should try to download again. The file seems to
download without a problem, but crashes when I try to run it.

Thanks

-Jim

Safely Delete the Temporary Internet Files
http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/delcache.htm

Then.... delete any related files in your hard drive from any previous
attempts to download or install. If you saved the file to your hard drive
or chose to Run, you may still have files from these attempts on your hard
drive and they are causing confusion. You say that you can download certain
files, such as .exe files, but, not others such as setup or install files,

also....it is possible that your system can be infected, and this would
cause your download problem.

Be aware, your Anti-Virus won't detect all types of warez, Trojans, malware,
worms, etc., and neither can other adware or spyware related programs such
as AdAware and SpyBot. They don't have the proper definitions. They must
also be run in Safe Mode with Hidden Files enabled in order to fully scan
all files. Even if you have run such programs and nothing shows up, it does
not mean your system is clean. It takes a series of programs to fully clean
your machine. Some very aggressive and damaging variants of malware can

its very general, i can download some files but they work fine, but lot of
files that i download seem to download ok but when i come to open them i told
they are corrupt

and it dont matter how many times i try to download a file nore where i
download it from its always the same, its happened with many files on file
planet which i know is reliable in my experience...

and also the nvida drivers from official site, i tried all the mirrors,
tried the beta drivers too, even waited till they release a later version,
but everytime it says file is corrupt.....

i run behind a broadband router which both mine and my dads computer run
off, so i tried to download same file to dads computer then transfer to mine,
and it works, both me and dad both use windows xp home edition with service
pack 2, both us same virus scan, same anti spyware software etc

so whatever the problem is its specific to my computer somehow, i browsed
net and found lot people with simlar problems but so far seems to be know
fix, and seeing as file runs fine when downloaded from different source it
most certainly must be related to actuall corruption during the download
process

considering i have latest bio and nforce 4 drivers etc for my motherboard i
kinda lost for what to do now

you don't happen to have one of those programs installed that let you resume
interrupted downloads?

if malfunctioning it could give you that problem ..

no i dont, no accelartors or anything, i just download via IE as normal....

its always the same files tho, nvidia once again updated beta driver and for
me its corrupt like the last one when i try to download it...

one thing i gonna try, my motherboard has 2 LAN ports, so i considering
trying it in the other port, maybe its a very minor fault on motherboard?

unlikely tho, but i just dont understand why inet works perfect, lot files
download fine, but lot also corrupt and always same file

something id clearly not translating right during the download proceedure

G

ok my problem fixed...kinda....

for those curious here the deal...

I basically tried the 2nd lan port on my otherboard and it works fine,
however i noticed the 2nd port use Marvell Yukon diver as opposed to the
nforce driver on my 1st lan port

therefore its safe to assume that they is either a problem with the latest
nforce drivers, or a fault on the motherboard....

everything used to work before in past so i assume its the newest nforce
drivers

yes ,I would lean towards "iffy" drivers
