Is there any way to download all messages from ACF for a certain time period
(such as 6 months)?

To rephrase that, I want to download all ACF messages (headers and body) in
plain text as one file for a specified time period.

It looks like your using news.individual.net for your newsfeed. They have
6 months retention in a.c.f I believe. You could set Agent up to download
all Messages and headers. Then it would download all of the posts that are
available into a mbox compatable file. Just a thought.

Since you are using Agent, I think the following might work:

1) Select alt.comp.freewere in the groups window

2) Click on the "Online" menu and select "Sample headers from selected
group".

3) Check "Retrieve all messages posted more recently than.."

4) Fill in the date.

The Berlin server's retention for alt.* is about 30 days. (AFAIR...it's
about 90 days in comp.* and other big8. Their website posts the specifics
somewhere...)

I'd recommend setting up an instance of Agent to download from this server:
news.readfreenews.net (read-only; public w no password req)

Their retention is about six months for ACF. I did a casual compare with
the Berlin server, and was pretty impressed. They seemed to be close as
far as the completeness, and the spam cleaning. (Re the spam cleaning,
my guess is that they might both be using CleanFeed,)

If seeking a server with equal completeness, but longer retention, the
best answer might be had by asking in alt.free.newsservers.

Since you are using Agent, I think the following might work:

It will work but is terribly inefficient. When Agent samples by date, it
first gets all, and then applies a date filter.

Then, select all posts and go to File | Save messages as and save the
lot to a single text file. You might want to select, 'no fields'...

Hi, Jack. I wasn't talking about web-based newsreading. Readfreenews
is running fine as an nntp server. In a separate instance of Agent, just
enter "news.readfeenews.net" for news server, and you're set to go. After
the download, then you can export the past six months of ACF posts into a
single mbox file.

A little more than you want, but I use the german server as a
searchable backup for this group. It's over a year of posts.

Can use chainsaw if attachment size is a problem.
