After re-installing WinXP Pro, I now get double-layered task bar at the
bottom of the screen.
How can I return to the normal, single line task bar? TIA. Roman

Move your mouse cursor over the top edge of the taskbar, you should now see
a double arrowed cursor, left click and drag the taskbar down to the minimum
size, then right click and 'Lock' the taskbar.

It's not a matter of "normal." The task bar can be whatever number of
lines you want it to be; it's resizable, like a window. Put the cursor
on the edge and make it turn into a double-headed arrow. Then click
and drag it to the size you want.

If it won't resize, it may be locked. In that case, right click on it
and uncheck "Lock the Taskbar," Then try again.

Also note that if you have toolbars on the task bar on multiple lines,
you won't be able to reduce the task bar size to fewer than that
number of lines. Put all the toolbars on one line first.
