Don't want full screen

I

Ilene

Hi,

My daughter has her own logon and somehow her settings
changed when she opens a new browser window. The new
browser window opens to "full screen" and she has to hit
F11 to get the window to come back to normal. It then
has to be "maximized" for her to use.

Can someone tell me how to reset IE so that it opens with
a normal-default size window-maximized? I can make the
change(s) in the registry if necessary but would prefer a
simpler solution.

Thanks!!! :)

Start>Programs>Internet Explorer>right-click>Properties>Run>Maximized.

Complicating things, if an IE window has been closed in Full Screen (F11)
and it's the last IE window closed, new windows will open Full Screen.
Windows will "remember" the size of the last window closed in any
application.

Tried your fix but it didn't work. :( I signed on each
of the logons and everyone's but mine (thankfully) opens
the browser window in the full-screen mode that is undone
by hitting the F11 button or restore at top right. Any
other thoughts?

Thanks,

Ilene

Other users should "undo" F11 and then make certain the "undone" window is
the last IE window closed.

Hi PA Bear,

XP Version 5.1 (Build 2600.xpsp2.030422.1633:Service Pack
1)

Physical Memory available to Windows: 523,056KB

I knew to do what you had suggested and it didn't work
for me. That's why I posted here. I thought maybe I
wasn't doing it correctly, so I tried it again several
times being sure to resize the window where it should be
and then closing it.

I think I was infected with a trojan of some sort and
that messed up certain settings. I thought I was safe
because I run McAfee Firewall and Virus Scan--online
version. I also scan my computer regularly with both
AdAware and SpyBot. I also noticed McAfee now has a
Spyware searching component to its scan function.

This is more of a frustration than a major issue but you
know how it is when you want something a certain way and
its not. Thanks for your help trying to resolve this for
me.

Open such a link.
Don't use the maximize button.
Stretch the edges/corners so that the window fills the screen.
Close all other IE windows.
Close the stretched window last.

With windows 95 you may have to hold the Shift or Ctrl key (Can't remember
which) while closing the last windows for the settings to be registered.

I'm coming into the thread late. Are you talking about "open in a new
window" or just opening IE? I had a problem where with "open in", new
windows were opening maximized, but not F11-type full-screen
maximized. Here's the advice I was given, from MVP Sandi Hardmeier.
The registry fix worked for me, not the first part.

Do export any keys you're changing so you can return things to their
original state, if no joy. Or backup. A good registry backup for
trying out changes, and as a backup to System Restore, is erunt.zip, a
575K freeware utility. http://home.t-online.de/home/lars.hederer/erunt
This trick should work.

Remove any 'Auto-hide' option for the taskbar and then maximise the
problem window. While the window is maximised, increase the height of
the taskbar from one row to two. Allow the maximised window to reset
itself to fit into the new area allowed by the taller taskbar. Now
return the taskbar to its normal single row. This is to try to make
Windows re-calculate the window size and boundaries.

If no joy, run regedit and remove these registry key values which are
most likely corrupted:

HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main\window_placement

HKCU\Software\Microsoft\internetexplorer\desktop\oldWorkAreas\OldWorkAreaRects

Then reboot.

Now IE windows should minimise properly.

Yes, this may help, Ilene. Sandi's page on this is
