Doing it right.

Need help with DNS! Just when I think I have this figured out, I find out
that I really have no clue!

Problem: I just signed up with hosting service and transferred my domain to
them. The problem is that my win2k local network uses the same domain name.
So when I went to do FTP or bring the site on my browser the name could not
be resolved. I called them to make sure everything was okay with them and
indeed, it was. I went outside of my network and I found that I could
resolve the name no problem. I figured that because of the name conflict I
could not resolve my domain name. So I tried using forwarders but that cause
my DNS to stop resolving all together. I tried a lot of other screwy stuff
and no joy.

Finally, I tried this:

1 Created a host record: hs.screwydomainname.net (not real name;-)) used
the Ip provided by the hosting service
2 Created a NS record: altdns.screwydomainname.net
sames here as far as the IP was concerned
3 Create an alias: www to hs.screwydomainname.net

Get the feeling we’re throwing [$h%it#$] against the wall and hoping some
will stick!

Anyway that mess worked! But can someone suggest the correct way of doing
this? I am hoping for a good explanation.

Thanks,

A

Thanks,

What a mess! Clean up the wall... :)

All you really had to do is create a www, ftp, or whatever record under your
zone, and give it the IP. No need to alter NS or SOA records or anything
else, etc, on your internal server, or you will create issues for yourself,
since they are being hosted externally. All you're concerned with is
accessing the stuff from inside, since you have a split-zone setup (same
name inside/outside).

I did remove the screwy name server entries and just kept my alias and that
worked. What can I say, I guess I am just synaptically challenged.

Thank you very much for your help.

Angel

Synaptically challenged, hmm, I like that term! I have to remember that one.
:)

Glad everything worked out for you, Angel.

Cheers!
