Does Windows Messenger Service still work?

T

Tony

I'm wanting to use Windows Messenger Service to send messages inside a
private LAN, but I seem to think that windows xp with the latest updates
wont let you do this anymore... Is that correct? Can it still be done
using NET SEND at a command prompt?? Does it have to be enabled somewhere?

Thanks in advance
Tony

Administrative tools>services should allow you to see if it is disabled or
not, usually it is.

Of course you will need to enable it on all the machines you want to use it
on. Seems that Automatic is the setting you'll have to use.

Thanks for that Charlie,

I was under the impression that Microsoft had removed or stopped this
working altogether in recent updates.... perhaps not. I hope not as I want
to make use of it on my LAN.

The installation of Service Pack 2 disables the messenger service, by
default, but it doesn't remove it.

It's right here in W2003 server but is disabled by default and may be
disabled by some updates... the latter I don;t know about... but I just
started it up and it works here.

Good one, I've tried a couple but they are all a bit cumbersome for normal
use with added functions I don't really want. I will give that a try.

Server is very slow and I see the mirrors don't work - oh well.

Yes that works but it's just a bit slow. According to the readme you need
messenger set to manual, else you get two popups, and I had a problem
getting it to run at startup just once so I don't know what happened there
however it seems okay now.

every so often (every few months) it does not load at startup (set in
options) , so I have to reinstall ...but thats the only problem I've had
with it.

we use it everyday to send temperature readings to groups of computers in
the lab...

Ah, well it is handy to know that is a known issue. I don't know how useful
it would be at work because some of the machines are dumb terminals (Wyse
Winterms) etc.

Haggis, does the program have to be installed on all computers for it to
send messages? If it wasn't installed, would they get a popup
instead?(assuming the windows messenger service was enabled on all
computers)

I'm looking for a program that can send out the same message at set periods
(automatically) say every 30 minutes. Any idea how to do that? I have
already sorted it with a batch file and windows scheduler, but if there was
a nicer option I would use it.

It *does* require the Messenger service? God, what's so damned difficult
these days about writing a simple LAN-based client/server chat tool without
relying on anything else?

I've been thinking about rolling my own for a while (just a matter of
finding the time), I thought I'd save myself some trouble with that, but if
it relies on Messenger, that's no good...

Go for it, but keep it simple. Most are full of crap like sticky notes and
no good to an admin who just wants to say "Sign off, updates are in
progress" etc.

It does not seem to be need messenger running, just not disabled, if
messenger service is running you get two popups, but it does have 2 problems
here. W2003 Server. It asks permission each restart but maybe not with XP,
dunno, and it sometimes fails to load at startup - so in fact if you want to
force users to see your admin messages Messenger service is batter.

Ugh. I know exactly what you mean. Trust me, if I ever get around to it,
that's all it's gonna do and nothing else.

I don't believe in Everything-Including-The-Kitchen-Sink(tm) software.
