Does anyone ever look past the first few days

You must have been doing something wrong there.

What version are you using? I have an old version - 1.91 or something.
But I tried 3.something last year and it works the same way. You have to
pre-download every message you might want to read before the single key
navigation works. It's still an "offline" reader.

I like "online" reading. You press space and the next message is instantly
downloaded (I have cable). When a thread topic wanders and/or turns into a
flame war, you haven't wasted time downloading an entire thread only to
discover that 90% of it is something you are not interested in.

I assume you mean "online" here. With cable, there is no such thing as
"offline" - you are always connected.

I may always be connected to my router and the Internet but I'm not always
connected to my NSP - I think that's where the delay is.
Are you on a dialup connection? I have cable and the next message is
downloaded as soon a hit the space bar. At most it takes a second, and
then only if my connection is very busy with me doing multiple downloads,
with the wife and daughter online at the same time.

No, ADSL - no cable (or street lights, mains drainage or gas) in the
village :)

I'm pretty sure it's the delay in logging on to my NSP that slows things
down.

I'm posting on a computer running Ubuntu. The (X11/20070104) gives it away.

Now I am posting using Knode, a program that is not available for Windows.

Too bad you can't even get your signature correct.

These are help NGs and often its much better to read from top down rather
than the other way around, especially for threads that have multiple message
in them, so one can help more easily.

Most of the messages in most MS NGs fall into the category of users helping
users and don't fall into the political and such crap that unfortunately
seems to be somewhat dominant in this NG and many of those participating in
it.

I frankly don't really care what you think of top posting versus bottom
posting, even though you seem to think its the most important aspect of your
messages.

I usually use T-Bird. I don't care much for Knode either or Pan for that
matter.

But as they say, "Different strokes for different folks!" and "Whatever
turns you on, man!"

Now that's an intelligent reply.

And actually the current version of KNode is quite stable. Don't let
the version number fool you.

Once they get it "fixed" for Vista, I'll let you know.

It has an online and offline setting. Perhaps that's it?

I agree and I'd swear that it worked that way.

It does, but only after you pre-download all of the messages (not just the
headers, the message bodies also). It's a colossal waste of time and
bandwidth.

Unless Agent version 4 has finally fixed this nonsense. I haven't bothered
to try it since Windows Mail in Vista works so well. I'll keep using my old
Agent version 1.91 for binaries, but Windows Mail is now my Windows news
reader of choice.
