dodgy copy of pro, want my original home ed back...

a few weeks back my laptop totally crashed out and wouldn't turn on so a
friend of mine took it and had to reboot windows for me (don't ask me what
went wrong, he took it and fixed it, i didn't ask). however he rebooted it
with a dodgy copy of xp professional which won't let me upgrade and has
annoying little glitches, which essentially don't stop the computer running,
but mean its not as smooth as it should be.

the computer came with xp already installed so i do not have a windows disc,
i do, however, have my product key etc stuck on the bottom of the machine.
is there any way i can get my original, smoothly running, genuine, xp home
edition back onto the computer? i would be so grateful of any help. thanks.

Your best bet would be to buy a copy of XP Pro UPGRADE, from staples or
various online sites, for about $100.00. I wouldn't recommend going back to
home from pro; there's nothing wrong with having Pro on your pc, the problem
is that its a bootleg copy and thus you cant run windows update.

If I were you I would look at your laptop documentation and see how to
recover XP Home to its original state. Before you do recover the laptop copy
all your important stuff to a CD, DVD or memory stick.

best of luck

Chris,
Could you point out a place you get XP Pro upgrade for $100 or so?
Staples.com wants $179, which is pretty much the price any other reputable
dealer will charge, as far as I've seen.

thanks for your help guys. i can't really afford to buy a new windows
package, which is why i was hoping i would be able to recover the original
one, and obviously it would be a bit annoying having to buy a new copy when i
should have a perfectly good one on already. i shall have a read through my
manuals and see if i can recover it.

Kaytiana:
Ignore FutureTechSys -- there is no need to purchase a retail version of
Windows XP.
Follow Neil's advice and read your laptop manual for information on
restoring your laptop to original condition.
If you are unsuccessful and/or can not find the disk(s) necessary to perform
a System Restore, contact the manufacturer of the laptop for a replacement
set of restore disks.
Generally, a set of replacement restore disks cost about $20.00.
