File > new and pick your letterhead template (You can swap the 'New'
toolbar button for the 'New...' button which does the same as the menu.)
or
Create your letter head details as an autotext entry and add the appropriate
autotext button to your toolbar.

Except in Word 2002, where the New... command just opens the New Document
task pane. You have to find the FileNewDialog command and use that instead
to open the dialog. Worse still, the FileNewDialog command doesn't have a
button face assigned, so you have to Copy/Paste it from the New button (and
if you put the command on the File menu, it shows up as Other..., so you
have to change the name to &New).

Not here! However, I have Word set not to use the startup task pane, and
thus NEW... opens the File New Dialog box

I also have Word set not to use the startup task pane, but I get the New
Document task pane when I use the New... command. Are you sure you haven't
either replaced that menu item or overridden the command with a macro?
There's a KB article that suggests recording a FileNew macro to use the
FileNew command, which seems pretty silly to me, but presumably it would
work the way you describe. Or perhaps this was something that was corrected
by one of the service packs? I haven't applied either of them, figuring that
at this point I'll just wait for Office 2003.

The plot thickens - I simply dragged File > New ... to the menu bar and
clicked it. It opens the file > new dialog.
This is Word 2002 SP2

I can only assume this has been corrected in one of the SPs then. I'll be
interested to see what becomes of the "correction" I sent to the KB people.
