Printing Envelopes in a Protected Document

Michelle F.

I have created a letterhead template using Word 2003. I then separated the
letterhead information from the rest of the document with a section break and
locked section 1 to prevent editing. When a user tries to print an envelope
from this document it is greyed out. Is there a way I can resolve this? I
tried to use the formatting restrictions but even if I turn all formatting on
it will not let anyone print envelopes. Help?

That's the problem with the inappropriate use of protected forms for
documents that are not forms. It seriously inhibits the range of functions
available. You could create a macro that unlocks the form, creates the
envelope then re-locks the form, but a much better idea would be to create a
normal letter template http://sbarnhill.mvps.org/WordFAQs/Letterhead.htm .

You are only protecting the letterhead from accidental editing, as any other
protection the locked form offers is an illusion, so put the letterhead in
the header where it should be and it is much more difficult for a user to
accidentally edit it.

You could then employ a userform to gather the data and insert it into the
letter. For the basics, see Word MVP FAQ - Userforms
http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/Userforms.htm

for a more in depth explanation, see
http://gregmaxey.mvps.org/Create_and_employ_a_UserForm.htm

You might find the macros at http://www.gmayor.com/Macrobutton.htm to insert
addressee information from Outlook useful.
