DO NOT INSTALL SP 2

R

R. McCarty

Service Pack installs run better on properly maintained computers.
Irregardless of hardware or software configurations. Service Packs
cannot overcome spyware, Trojans, Fragmentation, old drivers, etc..
I have now upgraded over 40 different systems and only on a single
one was there any kind of "Quirk/Anomaly" that needed some help.

Then I hope you are checking.
Many of the issues involve 3rd parties.
It is up to them and not Microsoft to solve issues with their
software.
Most reported issues have already been resolved.
Do you have the latest updates and patches for your software? There
are a bunch of fixes there.
Do you know how to configure the firewall? Another bunch of fixes.
The point is for the most part the fixes are already there, the others
you need to get, they will not come to you.
If your plan is simply to wait for the fixes to happen, you have a
very long wait.

Remove ZoneAlarm as it's obselete.

Nonsense.

Right use the good free one intrinsic to XP and lose ZA.

That's very poor advice. Although the Windows firewall isn't bad,
it monitors incoming traffic only. Almost any third-party
firewall will also monitor outbound traffic, stopping rogue
programs trying to call home, and is a better choice.

The word is regardless

Nonsense. ZA is much better than the new firewall on sp2. You can disable
the MS sp2 firewall and continue to get the in and OUT protection ZA gives
you.

I am sure the good people here who are expert will come with a way to remove
or completely disable the new xp firewall. I believe that ZA is much better
and a solid program. I put in the list I keep called "The Hall Of Fame"
software.

Nope, it's now obselete.

Not needed and NOT WORTH the expense of having an extra third party app for
OS support on one's PC. MS has been systematically helping us get rid of
more of those since it attacked Stacker & Netroom hell with W95.

My standard SP2 install procedure is to uninstall ZA(sigh and whisper thank
god as another uninvited old friend is gone) and then do SP2.

With a good virus checker that is sufficient. Just ASK MS!
Almost any third-party
firewall will also monitor outbound traffic, stopping rogue
programs trying to call home, and is a better choice.

Any extra and unneeded programs for basic OS and Inet functionality is NEVER
wanted or needed.

The Prophecy

When did I say anything about firewalls? I was refering to the problems
regarding 3rd party applications that do not work or behave differently
under SP2. And I am already well aware that most of those problems have been
fixed with new versions of those programs.

T

The Prophecy

I am well aware that those issues are with 3rd partiy applications. I am
also well aware that those 3rd parties are responsible for making sure that
their programs work under SP2. And I know that most of the issues have been
fixed. Yes I am using SP2 right now and have all the latest patches and
updates for every other program I am using. And finally, Yes I know how to
configure a firewall.

Yes, it is up to M$ to break those apps by radically changing XP with sp2..

When I click a link in my email to download a file, it
doesn't download anymore. I already have ZoneAlarm Pro on
my computer, so I don't need another firewall, and yet
when I do try to download a file, I get this message to
unblock this website. I don't want this message appearing.
Even when I unblock the website, I still can't download.

Html is block is reset when you install xp sp2.
Undo Options Security.
Uncheck Block html.

A better choice would be to stop the damaging software from ever
getting on the computer in the first place. No firewall will ever
replace computer user common sense!

Said "radical" changes were freely available to all those who made
those apps in the first place. Blame them for not updating their
software prior to final release.

If that is what you think,
At least it is consistent with most of your other replies.

However most of those applications are not broke and you would
discover that bit of truth if you ventured to reality for a change.
