DNSCache hang - Event 7011

P

Phil Arnold

I have a w2k pro system, with SP4 + all relevant hotfixes
which is periodically reporting the above error. This
system has fully up-to-date NAV2003, and has been online
scanned by Trend Housecall and Symantec online, too, with
no infection found. It resides behind a hardware
firewall. Just two PCs on the network, the other being
XPP.

Full text of error says:

Timeout (30000 milliseconds) waiting for a transaction
response from the Dnscache service.

It started giving this error from either DNSCache or (less
frequently) DMServer services about 2 weeks ago. Same
eventID on both. No new software has been installed
recently, and the latest hotfixes were installed several
days earlier than the first instance of the error.
There's no apparent reason as to "when" it happens. IE
may or may not be running, etc. Appears totally at
random. In the last 48 hours, the services process
running these have consumed about 15 minutes of CPU time,
and averages 8MB of ram. No other app has come close to
this much CPU time.

The instance of SERVICES running this task also has the
following:

216 SERVICES.EXE Svcs:
Browser,Dhcp,dmserver,Dnscache,Eventlog,lanmanserver,lanman
workstation,LmHosts,Messenger,PlugPlay,ProtectedStorage,sec
logon,TrkWks,Wmi

Any ideas appreciated. thanks!
