Eventvwr logs error from DNSCACHE service every 60 minutes.

Exactly every 60 minutes the following error shows up in
the eventvwr: "Timeout (30000 milliseconds) waiting for a
transaction response from the Dnscache service."

At that time the SERVICES process takes 90% of the CPU and
everything else hangs for 1 minute.

After 1 minute processing returns to normal. What is
happening?

System Status:
The only application in the background is the toolbar. No
other programs are active.

I recently cleaned the computer using SPYBOT.

No drives are mapped.

I'm on a network behind a firewall which GRC.COM confirms
is fully stealth.

IE is completely patched as of Dec 14, 2003 and no worms
(blaster, etc.) are on the machine according to norton
virus update definitions as of Dec 10,2003.

No servers are running.

Any ideas?

Spybot is indeed your cause. Check the HOSTS text file
(in %windir%\system32\drivers\etc) -- it probably now has
hundreds of lines in it. Rename that HOSTS. out of the way
or replace it with a copy of HOSTS.SAM and that should fix it.

If you have made manual entries to the hosts file you'll
need to re-enter them of course.
