DNS Question W2K

E

Ed Gartin

I have a mixed - mode enviroment running with 3 computers
running active directory and the rest of the network
running NT 4.0. All computers on the network can get to
the internet, except for the DC. The DC can ping any
computer on the network but is unable to resolve the any
host name on the internet. The DC cache lookups has
nothing in it but on the servers that are BDC's NT4.0 the
root hints are there and it is collecting information.
Not sure where the problem lies.

first, remove the 12.127.16.67 entry. Then ping 66.94.230.39 (that's
www.yahoo.com) from the server. Can you get there? If you can't ping it,
then you should do tracert 66.94.230.39 and see where it stops.

If you are able to ping by IP, then do net stop dns, net stop dnscache, net
sart dns and net start dnsache and try pinging by name again.

If you still can't ping by name, then set the DNS to use your ISP's DNS
server as fowarder. If you still can't get that to work, post back.
