Wrong DNS Server IP Address showing on the client computer

Ryan Cabanas

Hi,

I'm setting up my first test network using just a 2000 Server and a
2000 Pro client. I have the server's ip address set to 10.10.1.10 and
I have the it pointing to itself for the DNS address. Whenever I do
an 'ipconfig /all' on the client, though, it shows the DNS ip address
as being 10.10.1.1. I can't figure out what I need to do. Shouldn't
it be 10.10.1.10? Here are the 'ipconfig /all' shots for the server
and for the client:

Check your DHCP Scope/Server Option 006 for what DNS address you gave it.

Your DC has no gateway configured, it will not be able to make an outbound
connection to the internet without a gateway configured.

According to the ipconfig on your client this server has DHCP configured on
it.
So, you need to use the DHCP snap in and configure your scope options.
You need:
003 Router (you internet router's IP address, this will be your default
Gateway)
006 DNS server (configure 10.10.1.10 only if this is your only DC)
015 DNS Domain name (the DNS name of you domain, TestDomain.local)
044 (WINS Servers)
046 (WINS/NBT Node type)
Here are the 'ipconfig /all' shots for the server
and for the client:

configure this if you need internet access or if you have a router)

service is giving the wrong DNS address for option 006

Also if you have multiple subnets and Network Neighborhood is important to
you, and legacy clients (Win9x NT4) you need WINS and configure these:
option 044 (WINS Servers)
option 046 (WINS/NBT Node type)

Kevin..
Good eye.
:)

But one thing, he might be using Proxy's or ISA's web caching service for
web access which doesn;t require a gateway but just the Proxy address in the
browser.

These lines from the client configuration tell me that the
DHCP server is set up incorrectly. All of the following
info was obtained from DHCP and it is where the incorrect
DNS server info is coming from.

DHCP Enabled. . . . . . . . . . . : Yes
IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . : 10.0.0.3
Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.0.0.0

Going back to what Kevin suggested, on your DHCP Server, which apparently
is, according to the above ipconfig you provided, 10.10.1.10, did you check
Scope Option and/or Server Option 006 to see what DNS server is set? Scope
Option will override the Server Option, if it;'s set at those two places.
Look closely.

Seems pretty simple from this ipconfig to where the problem is coming from.
