DNS and connecting between WXP workstations

Hi All,

I have a Windows 2003 SBS network with WXP clients setup in a single domain.
When trying to connect from client PC's to a printer attached to one
particular client PC (PC_ONE), the user always gets an Access Denied
message. Permissions have been checked and rechecked and are set correctly
for those users trying to connect.

I made the assumption that PC_ONE had failed to connect to the domain
properly and so, I rejoined it. No difference.

When I checked the Event Logs, the only thing I could see was an EventID
11163
with a Source of DnsApi. It indicates that the DNS records for PC_ONE were
not
being updated correctly or did not exist because (it says) the DNS zone may
be locked. However, all the other PC's on the network are having no issue in
keeping their records up to date. I have images of the offending message
which
I can email if necessary.

I have searched the knowledge base and the only reference I can find to an
Event ID 11163 relates to MOM and a an Error, not XP and a warning.

If anyone can help I would appreciate it. If you need any further

Is it possible to attach the printer to the SBS Server and share it
? [this is the way I have it here]

Thanks for the response Roberto.

Unfortunately, the printer needs to be close to 3 users who all sit a fair
way from the server. Thanks for the advice about the SBS newsgroup, I have
posted this same message there and in the DNS newsgroups. I am fairly
certain that it is a WXP issue more than an SBS issue though.

What do the A records show in the DNS of the server?

Is it DHCP or Static?

If you do ipconfig /all what does it say? Does it show the correct DNS server?

Does the printer being shared appear in the directory? Can you right-click & connect to
it?

A records are fine (I think it has to do with the directory specific records
that it tries to update)

It is a DHCP address and yes Dynamic DNS is enabled so that changes to
addresses can be made

All the details are correct and the appropriate DNS servers are listed.

Does the printer being shared appear in the directory? Can you right-click
& connect to
it?

Yes you can and yes you can ... however, when it tries to make the
connection, an access denied message follows. It doesn't matter if you
connect through a directory listing, a net use command or just by browsing
the printer and double clicking on it. Each method seems to produce the same
results most of the time. This morning it is allowing one other client to
connect.

Why ask here? This had to do with an SBS DOMAIN. You should be
inquiring in an SBS group.

Thanks for that very rude and unwarranted response. Firstly it is NOT an SBS
Domain issue, it is a DNS issue and specifically with a Windows XP
workstation. Moreover, it is an issue between 2 clients not between the work
station and the domain controller or vice versa. The issue could be with the
TCP/IP stack on the local machine, another workstation and POSSIBLY the
server. Given there are 30 clients in this network, and this is the only
client with the issue, I would err on the side of the client being the cause
not the server. However since I am not sure where the problem is
originating, it makes a lot of sense to cover all my bases and ask in all
the newsgroups where a likely answer might be forthcoming. As I am no dummy,
as I am sure most of the people here are not, it would be nice if your
response showed a little more respect.
