DLINk G650 w/ SBC DSL and Xp -> Does not work ;(

I recently bought a modem/router from SBC (2Wire's homeportal 1000SW)
and was connecting my laptop to the internet through the ethernet
cable and all was fine.

However, I bought this Dlink G650 wireless card and I can not make it
work. For some reasons, it installs itself OK on the computer but can
not "talk" with the 1000SW. It rightfully lists the 1000SW as an
available network, but when I follow DLink's instrution and supply the
network key and all sort of things, I still do not get access to the
Internet.

Did anyone have any trouble with DLink. I tried to call their tech
support but gave up after 1 hour on hold. I am sure it's some stupid
problem and that there is nothing fundamentally wrong with both laptop
and wireless cards, but it's frustrating to have a wireless card which
does not work!

Thanks for your help!!!

do you have an A or B revision of the DLINK g card hardware? what drivers
are you using? are you using the Dlink config utility or Windows to
configure the card?

I'll have to check on the version of the card.

But I used the installation CD form D-Link as it was clearly
highlighted that I should not only plug in the wireless card.
Did I install the wrong dirvers.
I was unable to get Dlink tech support, but when talkijng to SBC tech
support, they suspect that both Dlink and windows are trying to
configure/use the card and therefore are in conflict. The tech guy
told me to uninstall Dlink's software and let Window's New Hardware
Wizard function do its job. I did it, but Windows could not install
the new hardware.

Do you have any idea of what's going on?

1. uninstall the D-Link configuration utility.
2. download the appropriate drivers for the card from their web site (if you
tell me which rev you have I can point the way).
3. update the driver already on the machine.

we can go on from there... post results here.

Hi Barb,

yes I already figured out by going to Dlink's support website that the
driver I got with the CD were wrong or outdated. Therefore, as my card
(ExtremeG DWL-G650) is a B2 version, I downloaded the right drivers.
When setting up those drivers, they uninstalled all of the utility
provided by Dlink on the CD.
After doing all that, I right-clicked on the 2-computer-icone in the
system tray, choose "view all available wireless nextwork".

In this screen, I saw my wireless router, typed in the network key
associated with this router and click connect, but still odes not
work.

I did the same thing but clicked on the "advanced", make sure to
uncheck "let window configure your wireless etc...", clicked OK..
Nothing works..

So now I am short of options (because the utility software let me
choose which channel/range to use etc..). What to do? Is there
anything I overviewed??

Thank you for your help!

what wireless router are you using? what firmware? are you using a HEX key?
WPA? have you rebooted? have you installed the WPA updagte 815485?

Hi Barb,

thanks for your help.

My wireless router is a 2WIRE's 1000SW. I got from when I signed up
for the SBC wireless package. I'm using 64k encryption key, my
wireless router is 802.11b – and my card is fully compatible with that
format.
I downloaded the WPA update from Microsoft's website as you
recommended byt to no avail. It still does not work. As I said, I
re-installed the right driver from dlink (and rebooted more than I
should! ;) )I still see in my system tray the wireless network
connection icon indicating that there are no wireless connection
available. Once again, when I click on this icon, I see in the
available network the name 2WIRE355 (which is the name of my router),
but when typing the network and clicking OK or when going through the
advanced tab, nothing happens I get no connection to it..

Do you have any insight as what may cause it? I am likely to bring
back that card and get the wireless card from 2WIRE, as it is getting
frustrating..

My email if you want to contact me directly is (e-mail address removed)
(replace nomail by yahoo).
Thanks again
