in display properties, under the desktop tab, all pics on my computer are
visible in the background section. how do i get rid of these pics and have
just the windows backgrounds i originally did?

You are so close to fixing the problem yourself!

You right click on the desktop, Click properties, then click the Desktop Tab.

In the Background choices window, use the scroll bar on the right and scroll up to the top.

At the top you will find "(NONE)"

Click on "None" and then click OK.

All desktop pictures disappear.

sorry but i dont think you understand my problem. the list is full of images
on my computer, i dont want these images in the list. even after selecting a
different wallpaper and clicking ok, all other pics on my computer remain on
the list.

The list is generated in XP from the location:

C:\WINDOWS\Web\Wallpaper

If you open explorer and go there you can delete the files you do not want to see in the list.
