Display 1024x768 on 1280x1024 LCD

My LCD has a native resolution of 1280x1024 pixels. Is it possible to
configure Windows so it displays everything as if the resolution was
1024x768 *but* using an actual resolution of 1024x768?

Making the fonts larger etc. messes up the display etc...

if the resolution was
1024x768 *but* using an actual resolution of 1024x768 will leave a border
of unused screen- the size of text and icons will end up the same as now.
Your actual pixels don't change from the native resolution of 1280x1024.
Changing the resolution from the native one usually means a poor display
with poor definitions of your text and icons. Your best bet is to change
your monitor to an LCD with the native resolution you want or use a CRT
monitor- they don't suffer from this problem in the way LCD screens do.

It seems you have the wrong monitor for your needs.
