Disk Defragmenter

Guest

I recently downloaded System Mechanic 6 - 30 day free trial as recommended
here and find that Windows own disk defragmenter has been removed by this
programme, how do I get it back please, I don't have the original XP
installation CD as XP was already on the PC when I bought it and I can't see
how to recover it in the Sys/Mech logs.
Thanks

another thing to try,
first, from explore go to the toolbar>tools>folder options>view>show hidden
files
Now, go to C:\Windows\inf>dfrg.inf.>right click>install

Thanks for the help. In System32 there is dfrgfat.exe dfrgntfs.exe
and dfrg.shd which one will reinstall it please?
The other offer of help re folder options puts the icon back in
Accessories/System Tools but when you click on it it's only a shortcut and
can't find the programme.

really? this just installs the shortcut?
C:\Windows\inf>dfrg.inf.>right click>install, ooops,
correction..C:\Windows>inf> dfrg>right click>install.

The other one, my first reply post..look for the colored icon that is the
icon for defrag tool..looks like colored blocks stacked up..should be in the
same row as the exe files you mentioned.

Still only installs a shortcut in Access/System Tools, comes up with this
message when I click on it.
Windows is searching for dfrg.msc. To locate it yourself click Browse.
This then takes me to Sys32 which leaves me non the wiser.
There is no coloured icon near the .exe files

okay, lets try it from another approach,
open the command prompt and type in,
cd \windows\system32
hit enter
then type these in, hit enter after each one,
regsvr32 dfrgsnap.dll
regsvr32 dfrgui.dll
Now, see if it's back.
If not, try the C:\Windows>inf> dfrg.inf>right click>install again.

It seems it's no longer installed on my PC after running a check as
instructed by a helpline I've just telephoned, so I now have to get an
installation CD.
Where it's gone I have no idea but it was there a couple of days ago before
I installed System Mecxhanic 6!!!!!!!!
Thanks for all your help.

It's recommended to NOT use any third party defragmenter. The built in
Windows defrag does all the work you need.

I strongly disagree.

The built in
Windows defrag does all the work you need.

I don't think there's an enormous need for most people to use a third-party
defragmenter--the built-in one is adequate for most people--but there *are*
better defragmenters, and for some people, the improvements can be valuable.
I would certainly not refrain from recommending a third-party defragementer.

Exactly. So we agree.

We do *not* agree. By using your creative methods of selective snipping, you
can make any message appear to agree with you, regardless of whether it
actually does or not.
