Disk Defragmenter stops responding

just started getting this bizare problem with Computer Management,
basically disk defragmenter keeps on crashing and then coming back to
life about every 20 seconds. it never actually gets to the stage where i
am able to perform a disk check, it happens as soon i go into the defrag
section.

AFAIK both my drives are actually fine, (raptor sata OS disk and 120GB
sata 2nd disk, on albatron K8X800 ProII). something else bizare is that
windows pauses for about 20 secs on boot-up just before all the icons
appear.... never used to do that.

apart from these anomolies everything else is fine with the system.
havn't installed any hardware or software lately so maybe a windows
update cause it...? i'm also running NIS 2004 if that's relevant.

This can happen if your anti-virus keeps intercepting the disk I/O
requests and checking them...unplug from the Net and "sleep" your AV
and try again.

Try booting into
Safe Mode and run Defrag from there.

hi thanks for your reply - i just tried that, same result. it basically
just hangs. in safe mode i presume AV software isn't loaded so it should
work... any ideas....?
