Disk defragmenter restarts

H

Here is the problem: When I goto analyze a hard drive,
the computer restarts. No error warnings, no dialog
boxes, its just poof gone!

Heres the stats:
the drive that is giving me the trouble (D:)is not the
one with the windows folder. It has only the main
partition, FAT32. This drive does contain the pagefile.
Its a 60 gig maxtor with no errors.

Defragmenter does work properly for the other hard drives
and partitions.

What can I do?

first, disable the automatic restart.

rightclick my computer > properties > advanced > startup
and recovery settings > uncheck automatically restart.
that may let you see the errors on the screen, giving you a
better idea about the problem.

second, have you tried defragging from the command line? i
prefer it to the gui one.

run > cmd > defrag c:

Ok, I disabled the the auto restart and took a picture of
the screen, here is a transcription of this Blue Screen
of Death... dun dun dun...

"A problem has been detected and windows has been shut
down to prevent damage to your computer.

IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL

If this is the first time... blah blah blah follow these
steps..

Blah blah blah remove new hardware...

Technical information:

*** STOP; 0x0000000A (0x7FFFFFFF,0x00000002,0x00000001,0x?
04E414E)"

The ? looks like either an 8 or a B.. or maybe a 6

I tried this with the GUI and Command line and got to the
same error message. Any other Ideas? Perhaps what might
be wrong?
