Disk defragmenter is broken

First time using disk defragmenter since installing xp.
Oh God how I wish I hadn't done that. Anyway...
I start disk defragmenter OK, but when I ask it to defragment it hangs, does
exactly, nothing, on 1% or 10%.

Estimated disk usage before/after are both grey blocks rather than showing a
coloured graphic representation of the disk....which doesn't seem at all
right.

Above this the disk information is displayed correctly (capacity/ free space
(of which there is plenty) etc.)

Any help appreciated, but please don't ask me to do mega-technical things. I
shouldn't really have to anyway - the damn thing should work. I paid for it
after all.

Try it in Safe Mode and do a Clean up and a ChkDsk first.

Your comment "when I ask it to defragment it hangs, does exactly,
nothing, on 1% or 10%." is odd! Which version of Windows are you using?

Before Defragmenting have you run Disk CleanUp. Also try running
Checkdisk before running Disk Defragmenter.

Detecting and repairing disk errors

You can use the Error-checking tool to check for file system errors and
bad sectors on your hard disk. Open My Computer, and then select the
local disk you want to check. On the File menu, click Properties. On
the Tools tab, under Error-checking, click Check Now.
Under Check disk options, select the Scan for and attempt recovery of
bad sectors check box.
Notes
To open My Computer, click Start, and then click My Computer.
All files must be closed for this process to run. If the volume is
currently in use, a message box will appear prompting you to indicate
whether or not you want to reschedule the disk checking for the next
time you restart your system. Then, the next time you restart your
system, disk checking will run. Your volume will not be available to
perform other tasks while this process is running.
If your volume is formatted as NTFS, Windows automatically logs all file
transactions, replaces bad clusters, and stores copies of key
information for all files on the NTFS volume.

A different person from whom? Are you defragging in Safe Mode? If not,
do so. To get into Safe Mode, repeatedly tap the F8 key as the computer
is starting up. This will get you to the proper menu to choose Safe
Mode. Once in Safe Mode, run the defragmenter.

If you are unable to defrag even while in Safe Mode, please post back
with details of your system for more help.
