Question about disk defragmenter.

I have a silly question about the disk defragmenter.

The first time I used disk defragmenter on my new comp-
(windows xp.) it just happened to be on the same night
where I ended up removing my cd-rom drive by accident.
(don't ask, long story. I was trying to install an
external drive.) Anyway, I didn't notice it was missing
until AFTER I had run the disk defragmenter. A few years
ago, I ran disk defragmenter on a laptop with window's
98, and it froze, and killed that computer.

So my question is.... if I run disk defragmenter- there
is no chance it will wipe out my cd-rom drive or kill my
computer???? I'm sorry, I just seem to have bad luck with
it, and need some positive view points from people whom
have run it successfully.

iwas looking for my own quest answered. saw yours. I

have windows xp . I t seems fine. it ec=ven will
analylize you hard drive and tell you if you should or
shouldn't run it. I am a computer klutz. if I can do it
you can do it. do you know how to get excell up an
running? i'm lost,if you know how feel free to reply good
luck.

The disk defragmenter on XP is quite a different defragmenter than the
one used in 98. 98 used a lite version of a defragmenter from Computer
Associates, while XP uses a lite version of Diskeeper from Executive
Software.

Also, XP is on the NT structure, so you can even defragment while
performing other low intensity tasks (like basic web browsing or word
processing) with little effect.

The XP defragmenter is very reliable and I have yet to see it cause any
problems, and I have run it on hundreds of machines.

BTW, if you want to improve your performance more, and be able to
defragment things like the Swap file, MFT, etc, as well as have the
computer schedule its own defragmentation schedule (recommended), than
you can upgrade to the full version of Diskeeper by purchasing it from
www.executivesoftware.com, or another retailer. It really is worth it.
