Disk Defragmenter Does Not Respond

When I click on the Defragment button nothing happens.
No warnings, no error messages... nothing! Disk Defragmenter
just sits there doing nothing. Same thing happens when I click
on the Analyze button.
I do have Administrator privileges, so I do not think that this is the
problem.
Does anyone know what I need to do in order to get defrag back
on its feet?

What happens if you boot into Safe Mode and try from there?

I actually thought about the Safe Mode method myself but the same thing
happens... No action whatsoever! <sigh>
