Disk Cleanup takes multiple hours to accomplish task, why so long ???

The "Disk Cleanup" task (Double-Click on My Computer --> Right Click on intended hard
disk --> Properties --> Disk Cleanup) takes extremely long to run.

It takes almost 1 hour/Gigabyte to finish .

Are there any fixes or methodologies that will speed up the process ?
