Disk Cleanup Again

Having the same old problem with Disk Cleanup. I have read past posts
on the subject and have tried the registry edit which deletes Compress
Old Files. This is a new (3 months) computer running WinXP Pro. I also
went to Control Panel, Add Remove Programs, Windows Components, hoping
to remove and reinstall Disk Cleanup. Problem is, it's not there under
Accessories, nor are most of the System Tools. How can I access Disk
Cleanup to re-install it? If this is not possible, is it safe to do a
complete re-install of Windows? My laptop is running XP Home and has
never had a problem with this. I checked the registry key Compress Old
files on it, and the key stats were identical.

Thanks for any help you can give me,

Catharine

Disk Cleanup runs from the .exe file 'cleanmgr.exe' located in
Windows\System32.

Open Windows Explorer and make sure the file is there. If it is, try double
clicking it to run it.

If it's not, click Start, Run, msconfig.

Click Expand File button.

Enter the file name cleanmgr.exe
Location source would be your XP CD.
Save file to Windows\System32.

MM, many thanks. After I did as you suggest here, Disk Cleanup still
did not work, BUT, I went back and again performed the Registry Edit
recommended in Microsoft Knowledge Base Article 812248 to delete
'Compress old files' key and this time it worked. Have absolutely no
idea why, but will just thankfully accept.

David, sorry I was not more precise, but had read so many past posts
about the "Disk Cleanup Tool stops responding while compressing old
files", that I assumed it was a fairly well known problem on the news
group. The Registry Edit was referred to in several of them.

Again, thanks to both of you, and to R, for your replies.

I'm the originator of that work around. However there are plenty of other questions about Disk Cleanup. And I thought (as a best guess) you were trying to undo the edit.
