DISK CLEAN-UP PROBLEM

hello,

I have a problem with my disk clean-up. I go
into system tools,then into disk clean-up to delete
unwanted files but when I hit the delete files box, it
comes up with
the bar graph with three green bars already showing and
just sits there and does nothing else.

below the bar graph it says compressing old files
like it supposed to,but it never gets past three green
bars, actually I think it says "compressed old files" is
that make a difference also?

it stays like that for hours
without completing the clean-up?
is that a hardware or software problem? can
you give me some ideas
of what might be causing this problem.

Save on Desktop.
Double click the icon once downloaded.
The icon can then be discarded.
