So it's having trouble reading the disk. Open the case and make sure
that the data and power cables connecting the disk to the computer are
securely seated. (You could enter the BIOS setup and make sure that
the proper SATA ports are turned on, and the BIOS is properly set to
find your drive(s). But that should have been set correctly before you
started having difficulty, and the BIOS setup is rarely entered, so
IMHO it's unlikely that the problem is there.)

Most likely, your disk drive has died. You'll have to have another
installed. You can probably recover data from your dead disk, but
you'll have to send it to a company like Ontrack, and it won't be
cheap.

I didn't mention it because it's much less likely than the disk dying,
but if it's not the disk, and not a BIOS setting it could be the
controller on the motherboard. Also, try a different cable, there's a
small change that it has developed a problem.

Download a drive diagnostic utility from the drive manufacturer's web site.
That will create a bootable floppy or CD. Boot from that and run the
diagnostics to see if the drive is the problem. As Tim said this is some
sort of hardware issue, not an XP OS issue.
